Emeralds - Allegory of Allergies

I was hesitant to add this album to the list. Not due to any qualms about it's greatness, but after posting Dreamweapon I thought that may be enough drone type music for the list at the moment. After some thought I decided to go ahead and add it.Emeralds is a three piece experimental/improvisational/drone outfit from Cleveland, OH. Their music is mainly comprised of analog synthesizers and guitar, although field recordings, vocals, and various other electronic gadgetry is also used. Did I run you off already? If not, keep reading.

Allegory of Allergies is a massive undertaking both from a musical and listening standpoint. It's also their most highly regarded release to date. Orignally released on cassette in 2007 (the vinyl should appear sometime this year), AoA clocks in at a daunting 120 minutes. Deep, deep drones are the main course here, and it definitely delivers. It's almost like getting a brain massage, although I can say that falling asleep while listening to this album may not be the best idea. The wake up can be really odd, especially if the album is still playing. Scary and fun at the same time. I will say right now that this is not for everyone, but I find it to be a perfect soundtrack to lazy spring afternoons, reading the paper with my morning coffee, or a night of getting blazed with good friends. I repeatedly find myself coming back to this album, trying to pick out the sounds I may have missed the last time. If you don't have decent speakers, headphones are a must!

Since releasing this album, Emeralds' music has begun to progress and mature at a really quick rate, and the discography has become somewhat intimidating, especially considering all the solo/side projects. It's like a nightmare for someone like me, who wants everything these guys put out. An attractive nightmare.
