Slowdive - Souvlaki

The now defunct Slowdive was a dream-poppy shoegaze band formed in Reading, Berkshire, England in 1989. First signed on Creation Records the group shared similarities to acclaimed (by some anyway) shoegazing label mates My Bloody Valentine, which as we all know is not a bad thing.

Souvlaki, the second album from the band, may also be the most popular, but I do think that Pygmalion is still underrated. That may just be me, I dunno. That aside, Souvlaki is a lush, hazy album. Lots of dreamy atmosphere surround the songs, with the lyrics being rather subdued. Some nice acoustic elements as well. Lots of high spots. It's an album that can always put me in a better mood, and is more than pleasant to nap to. A mixture of male and female vocals keeps the album fresh as you you take par in this cushy, dare I say somewhat bubbly drift. If you don't want to be a square, I'd suggest you inhale the smoke of burning marijuana buds before listening. Brings out good memories for me.

I should also mention that two tracks had contributions from Biran Eno, who we all love I'm sure. A wonderful touch to an already very rewarding album.

If for some reason you haven't checked this band out by now ( I believe they broke up in 1995), or Cocteau Twins you should really do yourself a favor and bliss out for a bit.
